What do we mean by brittle teeth?
At a young age biting into an apple or a guava was a simple task. Wasn’t it? But as you grow, your body goes through a lot of changes. Your teeth also face dental ageing and one sign of it is ‘brittle teeth’.It is a fairly common condition in which teeth lose their strength and break easily. They could crumble, crack or fall out without much impact or reason. Different causes trigger brittleness of the teeth. With good care and healthy eating habits, the condition of brittle teeth can be averted to a large extent.

ENAMEL EROSION

Erosion is the loss of tooth enamel caused by acid attack. Enamel is the hard, protective coating of the tooth, which protects the sensitive dentine underneath. When the enamel is worn away, the dentine underneath is exposed, which may lead to pain and sensitivity.

Enamel erosion occurs when acids, including those in a normal healthy diet, attack the outer layer (the enamel) of teeth. This makes the teeth softer and weaker.
But the main culprit is our culture of constant sipping and snacking throughout the day.

How to prevent enamel erosion:

  • Give your teeth a 3-4 hour break between meals;
  • Avoid frequent snacking ;
  • Finish your meal with a crunchy vegetable (carrot, stalk of celery, cauliflower, piece of Bell pepper, leaf of cabbage, sliced up cucumber) to help clean the teeth and stimulate saliva;
  • Chew some sugar-free chewing gum for 10 minutes;
  • When you have finished brushing, spit out excess toothpaste, but do not rinse with water. If you rinse with water, you will get rid of the Flouride. If you absolutely want to rinse after your teeth after brushing, use a flouride mouthwash.

IS SPARKLING WATER HARMING YOUR TEETH?

The Sparkling truth about...

A dentist in London warns that most people have no idea that fizzy water is extremely acidic.
It is considered the virtuous option compared to other fizzy drinks. And it is often more refreshing than standard still water.

But sparkling water is not as harmless as most of us think - and is actually more acidic than wine and vinegar, the dentist has warned:
"Most people have no idea that fizzy water is extremely acidic. The bubbles erode your tooth enamel - and over time this causes painful, yellow cracked teeth. Sparkling water has an acidic level of pH3 on the acidity scale. With pH7 being neutral, the figures make alarming reading. By comparison, salad dressing (e.g.vinegar) has a pH3.6."
